Cloudesley Association Update – October 2016

1. Residents Meeting

Just a reminder that we are holding our next residents meeting on Tuesday 11 October 2016 at 6.45pm at the first floor function room in the Drapers Arms.

Sadly Rowena Champion is unable to join us, but we met up with Rowena a couple of weeks ago to talk through local issues and we will provide feedback during our meeting. Whilst we hope that the meeting will be fairly informal and be more of an opportunity for residents to meet each other, an outline agenda for the meeting is as follows:

• Introduction
• AGM Matters
• Overview of current issues (as discussed with Rowena Champion) and how they are being addressed
• AOB/socialising etc.

2. Underground Noise around Cloudesley Square (and surrounds)

A number of residents around the Cloudesley Square area have been disturbed by a dramatic increase in underground noise over the past few weeks. This may be also affecting residents on other streets which follow the path of underground lines.

TfL have contacted one of the residents concerned with an offer for him and other residents to meet with Jennette Arnold AM and TfL, to discuss noise coming from the Tube and concerns around the Night Tube.

A meeting has been arranged for residents in the Highbury area as follows :
Date : 6th October 2016
Time : 6.30pm
Venue: Palestra, 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8NJ

If any of you are affected by the noise and would like to attend this meeting, please could confirm your attendance to Fara Oladejo (Tel: 02079834349, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) as space is limited.

3. Kings Cross Pond

The Kings Cross Pond Club (http://www.kingscrosspond.club/), a natural bathing pool in the heart of London has become a very popular destination for local swimmers. It is a fantastic local facility which we would love everyone to know about.

Sadly, it only had temporary planning permission though as it was not envisaged as a permanent fixture and it is due to close on 26th October.

There is a petition to try and keep it open so if you are a regular user, or would merely like the opportunity to try it, please do sign the petition, which can be found at:

https://www.change.org/p/argent-fusion-keep-kings-cross-pond-open-for-all-year-swimming-please-don-t-scrap-it

4. Pavements

There have been a number of recent pavement repairs that have not been done particularly well. Sadly one local resident on Cloudesley Road was quite seriously injured as a result of a loose paving slab that had been "repaired". Rowena Champion has been made aware of this issue but asks that anyone who has noticed loose/badly repaired/dangerous paving to send photos (either directly to her or through us). Please let us know if you come across any such issues near your homes.

5. Kings Cross Events

• Halloween in Kings Cross - special spine-tingling performances in Granary Square between 5pm and 7pm on Monday 31 October. The event is free to attend.

• "Everyman on the Corner", a temporary bespoke 32 seat Everyman cinema has arrived in the Plimsoll Building (on the corner of Wollstonecraft St and Handyside St).

• The London Greek Wine Festival is back for a second year on the weekend of 8th / 9th October. Tickets can be bought here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-greek-wine-festival-tickets-26054704322

If you are aware of any event, consultation or news item that you would like us to include in our next newsletter, please let us (or your street rep) know.

As ever, if you know of any neighbour who is not on the Cloudesley Association e mail distribution list, please pass this e mail on and/or ask them to provide me with their contact details so that they can be kept in the loop.

Cloudesley Association Update – September 2016

1. Dowrey Street Site

Please find attached the monthly newsletter produced by Morgan Sindall, which includes an apology for the noise/disruption that was caused on the evening of 26 August. The attached newsletter contains details for Kevin Morrallee, the project manager, as well as phone numbers for Paul Harris and Tom Butvillas, the current site managers. If you have any concerns/issues please do feel free to contact them.

2. Open House London

It is this time of the year again! London Open House is your opportunity to explore hundreds of exciting buildings in London. The programme for 2016 has been announced, which includes lots of places to discover in Islington and throughout London over the weekend of the 17th & 18th September.

Programme details can be found at http://www.openhouselondon.org.uk.

Please note that you may need to make a booking for some locations, although there are plenty of architectural wonders that do not require booking and you can just pop by and visit. Well worth it - there is something for everyone, from the small private residential projects to schools and offices, as well as new build and historic buildings.

3. Residents Meeting

Please note that we are now able to confirm that we will be holding our next residents meeting on Tuesday 11 October 2016 (not Monday 10th as we mentioned in our previous update as we struggled to get a room for that date).

The meeting will take place at 6.45pm at the first floor function room in the Drapers Arms again. We will circulate an agenda beforehand. We were hoping that Rowena Champion might be able to join us but she is sadly busy that night. However, Rowena is hoping to meet up with us in advance of the meeting to talk through local issues and we will provide feedback during our residents meeting.

4. Kings Cross Events

• London Fashion Week is coming to Kings Cross Friday 16th – Tuesday 20th September.

Cloudesley Association Update

1. Dowrey Street Site

It seems that the demolition of the school building has commenced.

The council has confirmed that the builders are due to send out another newsletter (in fact they said it was coming last week), updating us on progress and what comes next - we were hoping to attach it to this update but it doesn't seem to have been distributed yet.

We are also trying to get hold of the details for the site manager and will update you next month with this information.

In the meantime, please do let us know if you are having any issues with the development.

2. The Church

Camilla Gersh has updated us on the status of the church and has once again confirmed that the Church of England are definitely planning on restoring the building, and probably doing some development work. The nature of this development will include the provision of additional community facilities and will definitely not be residential. They are in talks with several different charitable organisations about a cooperative venture for the building and the local parish, the Barnsbury Team will definitely have a presence. The Churches Conservation Trust are involved as project managers for the fundraising and repairs/development project and are putting together some business/project plans and legal agreements, as well as cost projections and design briefs, in the coming weeks. The timing of the project is slightly dependent on the current residents, the Celestial Church of Christ. Hopefully they will also be keen for our beautiful church restored to its former glory as soon as possible.

If you would like an opportunity to see the inside of the Church, the local elections will be taking place there next week so there is another reason to go ahead and vote.

3. Barnard Park – Dates for the Diary

The Friends of the Park are hosting three pop-up Sundays of free fun activities between 11am and 4pm on 5th, 12th and 19th June.
If you have kids, you may be particularly interested in attending on 5th June, when the Adventure Playground will be offering a Family Playday.
Here is what's in store:

  • June 5: Mrs H & the Singalong Band, Oxjam music jam, Bouncy castles and other activities for children of all ages. International petanque tournament – watch play!
  • June 12: Scruffs dog fun with free advice from Zasman Vet. Queen's Birthday Party – tea and scones. Her Majesty may just make an appearance.
  • June 19: Open Squares Tour – Park volunteer gardening on show, plant sale and park history mini-exhibition. More flower power in the works...

The Friends Café will be serving coffee, tea, ice cream and cakes every Sunday.

There appears to have been an arson attack on 5 motorbikes in Cloudesley Street - see photo.  Residents say it happened at about 5.00am on the night of Monday, November 11th.

Motorbike Arson Cloudesley St

Worryingly, this follows on from a similar attack in Richmond Crescent where a moped was torched, setting fire to a nearby car, as reported in the Islington Tribune - see below.

What's going on?  Does anyone know anything about these incidents?  Comments welcome!
